Importance of Detecting Intellectual Disabilities Early

importance-of-detecting-intellectual-disabilities-early

Intellectual developmental disabilities are marked by issues with general mental capacities. They affect functioning in two main areas, which are intellectual functioning and adaptive functioning. Early detection and intervention can have a major impact on a child’s capacity to learn new abilities, as well as lessen the need for costly interventions over time. Most importantly, it has the potential to improve long-term outcomes for children.

Here at A-1 Affinity Care, an HCS program provider in Texas, our services are focused on providing the highest quality of care to those living with disabilities and their families. We also hope to raise awareness about the issues we support.

While diagnostic procedures are available during pregnancy for early identification, certain problems are not discovered until the first few months or years of a child’s life. Many signs indicate an intellectual disability. Children may:

  • Sit up, crawl, or walk later than other children
  • Learn to talk later, or have trouble speaking
  • Have trouble understanding social rules
  • Have trouble seeing the results of their actions
  • Have trouble solving problems

It’s worth noting, however, that the following list is by no means complete. Consult professionals straight away if you suspect something is not quite right with your child’s development. That way, they can receive appropriate treatment.
